We recommend that our patients that are active
in sports wear properly fitted mouthguards to help prevent injuries to the
teeth, tongue, lips, face or jaw joints.
According to the American Dental Association®, studies show
that athletes are 60 times more likely to suffer harm to the teeth if they are
not wearing a mouthguard appliance. While high contact sports such as football, soccer and
boxing are at higher risk for mouth injuries, dental injuries are also common
in independent activities such as roller skating, skateboarding and
gymnastics.
Fit matters with Dental Mouthguards
It is extremely important that a mouthguard be well-fitted
to provide the most protection. A poorly
fitted mouthguard can pop out during sports contact, making it useless.
